Democrats eye post-election powers

US lawmakers, commentators, and the White House are mapping out what a Democratic takeover of Congress — and a post-Trump era — could look like after Tuesday’s midterms.

If polls are to be believed, then a sweeping Democratic victory could render US President Donald Trump a “super-lame duck,” forecaster Nate Silver told Ezra Klein, potentially triggering a succession process that Trump managed to stave off following his 2020 defeat; a definitive GOP loss could hurt Vice President JD Vance’s 2028 chances.

Democrats are already laying the groundwork for investigations into the Trump administration, which has spent months planning for such probes and for ways to advance Trump’s agenda, including “where he could push the limits of his authority,” a White House official told Reuters.
