Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 November 2026
News Kenya ("we", "us", "our") operates NewsHub at www.newskenya.net. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, how long we keep it and the rights you have under the Data Protection Act, 2019 (Kenya) and its Regulations. We are the data controller for the personal data described here.
1. What we collect
- Account details – name, email address, phone number and company name, when you register.
- Advert content – titles, descriptions, photos, prices, locations and contact details you choose to publish in a classified advert or banner.
- Payment records – amount, currency, reference, status and gateway used. Card and mobile-money details are entered on the payment provider's own page (Paystack or Stripe) and are never stored by us.
- Technical data – IP address, browser type and pages requested are processed transiently to deliver the site, prevent abuse and rate-limit sign-in attempts.
- Anonymous analytics (only if you accept analytics cookies) – which pages are viewed, device type, browser, referring site and your country. Country is worked out from your IP address; we do not store your IP address in our analytics, only aggregate counters.
- Messages – anything you send us by email.
2. Why we use it (lawful bases)
- To provide the service you asked for – accounts, adverts, payments, receipts (contract).
- To keep the site secure and prevent fraud and abuse (legitimate interest / legal obligation).
- To understand how the site is used and improve it (your consent, via analytics cookies).
- To keep financial records and respond to lawful requests (legal obligation).
- To send service emails such as receipts, approvals and password resets (contract). We send marketing email only if you opt in.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies in four categories – necessary, preferences, analytics and marketing. Only necessary cookies are set before you choose. You can change your choices at any time using Cookie settings in the footer. Full details are in our Cookie Policy.
4. Who we share data with
- Payment providers – Paystack and/or Stripe, to take payment.
- Hosting and infrastructure – our hosting provider (Namecheap) and, where enabled, a content-delivery network.
- Geolocation lookup – if analytics cookies are accepted and your country cannot be read from the network headers, your IP address is sent once to a geolocation service (ipwho.is) to obtain the country code; the result is cached against a one-way hash for up to 30 days.
- Social networks – we publish news links to our own social media accounts. If you click share buttons or follow links to those networks, their own policies apply.
- Authorities – where required by Kenyan law or a court order.
We do not sell your personal data.
5. International transfers
Our providers may process data outside Kenya. Where they do, we rely on safeguards required by sections 48–50 of the Data Protection Act, 2019, such as contractual protections or your consent.
6. How long we keep it
- Account data – while your account is open and for up to 24 months afterwards.
- Advert content – while live and up to 12 months after expiry.
- Payment records – 7 years, for tax and accounting.
- Sign-in attempt logs – 24 hours; password-reset tokens – 1 hour.
- Analytics – aggregate counters only, up to 13 months.
7. Your rights
Under section 26 of the Data Protection Act, 2019 you may ask us to: access your personal data; correct it; delete it; object to or restrict its processing; receive a portable copy; and withdraw consent at any time (withdrawal does not affect earlier lawful processing). Email marto300x@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days. If you are unhappy with our response you may complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), Kenya – www.odpc.go.ke.
8. Security
Passwords are stored hashed, forms are protected against forgery, data is sent over HTTPS, and access to the admin area is restricted. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affecting you occurs we will notify you and the ODPC as the law requires.
9. Children
NewsHub is not directed at children under 18 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. Contact us if you believe a child has registered and we will delete the account.
10. Third-party news content
Headlines, summaries and images shown in our news feeds are supplied by publishers through public RSS feeds. When you click a story you leave NewsHub and the publisher's own privacy policy applies.
11. Changes
We may update this policy; the date at the top shows the latest version. Material changes will be notified on the site.
